We’ve launched our first Monday Mumsday series this morning! This session, “Coffee + CODE,” introduced basic coding teaching techniques for mums to share with their young ones. With the smell of warm coffee and buttery croissants in the air, twelve brave mums – with no prior coding experience – were ready to get started.
Lise Carpenter, our marketing head, quickly presented our Holiday Tech Camps, course material from which was drawn for today’s workshop. Instructors Sophia Nazer and Gabo Tse then dove right into what HTML and CSS are, the backbone of a web page and style/format, respectively.
Using the “inspect element” feature in Google Chrome browsers, mums started “hacking” websites straightaway, replacing images from Sophia’s Puglife HK website with poodles, ducks, huskies, you name it.
Mums were soon styling and personalizing pages to their liking, changing colors, sizes, background, etc. Using a free tool called Codepen.io, they could created their own basic pages in HTML and CSS, previewing it live as they wrote the code.
Many were surprised to learn of all the different benefits that come with learning coding. Teaching kids how to code doesn’t mean they have to become hardcore coders/ web developers. Coding helps develop their problem-solving skills and logical reasoning. Learning code teaches kids how to think and approach problems, and is helpful for understanding many other disciplines.
We’re so proud of our first group of mums who with no prior coding experience all created a simple page within an hour and a half! We’ll be running more Monday Mumsdays on other topics too! Stay tuned for a talk from Sophia focused on Digital Marketing.
